It Is What It Is.

                             Seismic Hat

      The pattern in this hat reminds me of my hometown, Los Angeles, which is known
for its earthquakes.  To create the unique texture you work the stitches into a loop that
isn’t common to most stitch patterns.  Instead of working the stitches through the front
or back loops of the previous stitch insert your hook into the strand of yarn that lies
horizontally just behind the back loop.  Working into the loop on the back of the stitch
pushes the top loops forward creating a faux rib.

Finished size 19” circumference x 7” high, stretches to fit 20-23” head size

Materials

Worsted weight wool (CYCA #4 medium), 170 yds (shown in Lion Brand Wool Ease
(80 % acrylic, 20% wool; 197 yd [180 m]/3 oz [85 g]): color #188, paprika)
5 mm (H/8) hook, or size needed to obtain gauge
Stitch marker
Yarn needle

Gauge 13 sts x 13 rows = 4” (10 cm) in hdc-rib.

Abbreviations

Hdc = half double crochet
Sc = single crochet
Dc = double crochet
Trc = treble crochet
St = stitch
Rep = Repeat
Sl st = slip stitch
Ch = chain
Pm = place marker

Special stitches

Adjustable ring: Leaving a 6” tail at the beginning, wrap the yarn around two fingers
to form a ring and use the hook to draw a loop up through the center of the ring.
With the hook still in the loop, remove the ring from your fingers, grasp the ring with
the non-dominant hand and chain 1.

Hdc-rib st (sc-rib, dc-rib, trc-rib): Work specified stitch into the horizontal bar
found just behind and below the back loop of the stitch.

Rev sc: Working from left to right, sc through both loops of stitch.

Notes

The pattern is worked in the round without joining.  Place a marker (pm) in the first
stitch of the round to mark the beginning.  Move the marker up to the first stitch as
you begin each round.  Do not turn at the end of each round.
